Made for busy classrooms

Cold calling with a wheel keeps every student ready to answer, and it feels fair because everyone can see the choice is random. This classroom wheel is designed around the way lessons actually run: different classes through the day, students away, and the need to give everyone a turn.

Classroom ideas

  • Questioning: pick who answers next, so every student stays engaged.
  • Reading aloud: choose the next reader or the next paragraph.
  • Jobs and helpers: share out classroom jobs for the week.
  • Presentations: set a fair speaking order.
  • Rewards: spin for a prize or privilege at the end of the week.

Pair it with other wheels

Split the class into groups with the random team generator, run a feelings check-in with the wheel of emotions, or pick a question number with the random number wheel.

Tips for using a wheel in class

Set expectations before the first spin: everyone should be ready to answer, and "I don't know yet" is an acceptable answer as long as the student tries again after hearing a classmate. Give thinking time before you spin, so the wheel adds excitement rather than pressure.

Keep a separate saved class for each group you teach, and load the right one at the start of the lesson. Marking absences takes seconds and keeps the wheel honest. At the end of a round, every present student has had a turn, which is easy to show to students who feel they're "always picked". If you prefer to choose two students at once for paired work, the Pick winners tab on the wheel of names can draw several names in one go.

Frequently asked questions

How does the random student picker keep things fair?

Picked students are removed for the rest of the round, so every student is chosen once before anyone is chosen again. Start a new round to put everyone present back on the wheel.

Where are my class lists stored?

Only in your browser on this device. Student names are never uploaded. If you use another computer, you'll need to add your classes there too.

How many classes can I save?

Up to 20 classes, each with up to 1,000 names, which is plenty for a full timetable.

Can I use the classroom wheel on an interactive whiteboard?

Yes. Open the page in your whiteboard's browser and press Full screen for a large wheel. Students can even tap the wheel to spin.

Should I use real student names?

That's up to your school's policy. Names stay on your device, but many teachers use first names only, initials or seat numbers.
