How to use the random team generator
- 1Type or paste everyone's names in the Entries tab, one per line.
- 2In the Teams tab, choose to split by number of teams or by people per team.
- 3Enter the number and press Make teams.
- 4Not happy? Press Shuffle again for a completely new set of teams.
- 5Press Copy teams to paste the result into a chat, email or document. Spin the wheel to pick captains.
Fair teams without the awkward picking
Choosing teams by hand often leaves someone picked last. A random team generator skips that moment completely: everyone is placed by chance, and the teams come out the same size.
Great for
- PE and sports: five-a-side, relay races and practice drills.
- Classroom group work: projects, discussion groups and reading circles.
- Work: workshop breakout groups, hackathons and team-building games.
- Quiz nights and parties: trivia teams, charades and board games.
Tips
- Remove anyone who isn't playing today before making teams.
- Use the Remove duplicates button if the same name was pasted twice.
- Need just one person, not teams? Use the wheel of names instead.
Random teams, balanced your way
Pure chance is the fairest way to choose, but sometimes you also want teams of similar strength. A simple trick: make teams once, look them over, and if one team is clearly stacked, press Shuffle again. Because each shuffle is completely independent, you'll quickly get a split everyone is happy with, and nobody had to be "picked" by a captain.
For tournaments and leagues, run the generator once per round to mix people up and help everyone play with someone new. For school group work, keep the same groups for a whole project by copying them into your notes with Copy teams. The names you enter are saved on your device, so the list is still there next lesson or next game night.
Frequently asked questions
How does the team generator keep teams fair?
Everyone is shuffled with secure randomness and then dealt into teams one by one, like dealing cards. That keeps team sizes within one person of each other and gives everyone the same chance of being on any team.
What happens if the group doesn't split evenly?
Some teams get one extra person. For example, 10 people in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.
Can I make pairs or small groups?
Yes. Choose People per team and enter 2 for pairs, 3 for trios, and so on.
Can I pick a team captain too?
Yes. After making teams, spin the wheel to pick a captain, or use Remove winner automatically in Settings to choose a captain for each team in turn.
